Spike in Volunteer Community Cleanup Efforts in 2016

The number of Make It Shine events in 2016 represents a 21 percent increase on 2015, when there were 154 events.

There was a significant increase in the number of volunteer community cleanup events in West Virginia in 2016.

In 2016, there were 187 community cleanups events registered with Make It Shine, a program of the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP), involving 6,889 volunteers.

The Make It Shine program provides cleaning supplies, haul-away services and other logistical support to local cleanup efforts on public property. The program is funded by tipping fees charged at trash tipping sites around the state.

The number of Make It Shine events in 2016 represents a 21 percent increase on 2015, when there were 154 events.

The 6,889 participants represents a 56 percent increase on 2015, when there were 4,414 participants.

In 2016, Make It Shine events resulted in the removal of 79 tons of litter and waster, 986 dumped tires, and cleaned-up 252 miles of roadway and 167 acres of parkland.

The WVDEP keeps detailed figures of the amount of waste it collects each year, in order to measure the value of programs like Make It Shine.

According to WVDEP Make it Shine Coordinator Terry Carrington, the majority of Make It Shine events are held on public roadways and streams, with communities also focusing on public parks and historical landmarks.

Many communities focus their cleanup efforts during the annual Make It Shine Spring Cleanup, which is held the first two weeks of April, although Make It Shine will support cleanup events held any time of the year.
